The Pre-Harvest Push

“God, grant us the serenity to accept the things we cannot change, the courage to change the things we can, and the wisdom to know the difference.”

Despite having grown up in Catholic school, I’m not a very religious person. However when it comes to winemaking, this prayer has never been truer.

You see as hard as winemakers try, we’re always at the will of the grapes. Each year the weather patterns are different meaning you never know when the grapes will be ready. Lots of sunshine and no rain? Cooler weather and too much rain? It’s forever a gamble, and from what we’ve gathered in Clare it’s a very late year.

That doesn’t mean the fruit will be terrible though! The length of the growing season may never be the same, but as long as the grapes have enough time to ripen our winemakers will have plenty to work with.

The real issue has been finding ways to entertain ourselves for a few weeks in a small town and house with no internet. As you can probably tell, I’ve taken to writing more because I missed it and it’s not like things down under aren’t interesting. That and the fact I only have two movies offline.

Others I live with have been slightly more productive. My German roommate Gerrit went off and joined the local gym. Josh has been binge-watching My Name is Earl and Johnny, our roommate slash local mentor, introduced us to the Aussie classic The Big Lez Show. But otherwise, it’s just a lot of hanging around.

Besides the excitement of figuring out how to open our Australian bank accounts, we have made it on a few adventures! We’ve already checked out a few (read: 14) wineries in Clare and Barossa Valley, biked the Riesling Trail and even made it to Wallaroo beach. And although we have a four day weekend coming up thanks to Australia Day, we did technically start work Monday so that’s something.

Once we get going it won’t stop so might as well enjoy it while we can.
